Three Rooms

of your own. The solitude
to watch chickadees arguing
at the feeder outside your window,
backlit by winter.

Everyone tried, but who wants to live
in their child’s house?
You are the mother.

When your daughter visits,
she brings oranges.
They glow in your bowl on your table.

The care worker blesses your skin with the washcloth,
and you are grateful,
but not beholden.

You no longer cook, but you can choose.
Tonight, you’ll have the lasagna.
Already, mozzarella coats your tongue.

Until then,
enfolded in silence,
you watch the birds.
