Hello and happy summer to all!
Today’s note is our first update since March and there’s lots to share.
As many of you know, we’ve been closed to fiction and poetry submissions for a while due to a deluge of work that came in just after reopening in January. Apologies to writers still waiting to hear about the status of their work (we haven’t forgotten you!), and to others who have wanted to send work while we’ve been closed.
A few updates:
- We will reopen to all submissions from June 15 to July 15. However, and please note: We will close to poetry, fiction, and essays when we reach 50 submissions in those genres.
- We will close to everything for summer break on July 15 until after Labor Day. We will reopen to all work (except fiction) on Sept. 2, 2025 and will accept submissions in all genres — capping poetry and essay submissions at 50.
- From Sept. 2- Oct. 3, we will accept flash fiction submissions (stories under 1,000 words) for our Fall Flash Fiction Contest. We will cap subs at 75 entries or close on Oct. 3, whichever comes first. To reiterate — during this period, we will NOT accept regular fiction submissions, only contest entries.
- In October, we will stay open to all submissions (including regular fiction). However, all caps will remain in place and we will close to any genre that has reached 50.
- We will close to all submissions for the year on Nov. 15, 2025. We will reopen on Jan. 5, 2026.
- We will publish our last post for the year on Weds., Dec. 17. We’ll publish again on Monday, Jan 4, 2026 when we reopen to all submissions.
Please note: We continue to publish work throughout the year even during the periods that we’re closed to submissions. Our publishing schedule only stops for two weeks in mid-December for the holidays, and reopens after New Year’s.
About our upcoming fall writing contest, we’re excited to offer flash fiction writers the opportunity to submit! The contest will be open to all themes. (You can read about previous contests on our Contests page.) The winning writer will receive $600; the second place winner, $250; and the third place winner, $150. We’ll provide more details when the contest is closer.
As always if you’re interested in helping to fund honorariums for the artists we publish, please visit our Support page for details. Options are PayPal, credit card, and a check payable to The Sunlight Press, PO Box 161, Merion Station, PA 19066. Questions? Ask us at thesunlightpress@gmail.com. All donations are tax-deductible. We also thank artists who donate their payment back to the journal. Most appreciated! We are grateful for all support.
Until we touch base again, we hope you have plenty of moments for fun and reading this summer!
Warmly,
Beth & Rudri
