Today we welcome back photographer Molly Engel and her three photos taken in Oregon and Maine.

Monhegan is a small island in the Gulf of Maine known in part for its history as an art colony (of which Rockwell Kent was one of the first members!) Whenever I visit this island I fill at least one full roll of 36-exposure film. Pictured here is Monhegan Light, the island’s lighthouse, photographed from the town below where I was standing in a patch of yellow flowers.

Cannon Beach is likely the most popular coastal destination for residents of Portland, Oregon and it is home to many sea stacks, which are geological landforms formed by wave erosion. Sea stacks consist of columns of rock in the sea, near a coast, and Haystack Rock is Cannon Beach’s most famous by far. Trailing behind in fame are the two smaller and skinnier stacks pictured here, known as The Needles.

Sauvie Island is the largest island along the Columbia River, which divides Oregon and Washington. The island is home to plenty of rural farmland as well as a wildlife refuge with many walking paths. I was exploring one of these paths with a couple friends when one of them noticed this snake curled up neatly in a tree, making a perfect subject for this photo.

Thank you for the lovely visit to Monhegan – one of my favorite spots on the island! And for introducing me to the sea stacks.
