Caitlin’s photo, “Beach at Dawn #3,” (first image) was shortlisted in our 2024 Spring Photography Contest. She talks about both images below.
Both photos were taken on the beach overlooking the ocean moments after dawn in the small coastal town of Arverne by the Sea (N.Y.). It was just as the sun began to spill over the long line of the horizon, as formed by the gentle curve of the sea. I love those golden hour moments when the sun reflects upon the face of the waters and can be seen rising past the edge of the invisible world that exists beyond the horizon, where the eye cannot follow, into the realm of the tangible. I love capturing these luminous moments, when the clouds are awash with the colors of sunrise. Dawn is rife with a sense of possibility and promise as well as the hope of another day. It is a poignant reminder that life is cyclical and follows laws beyond our control. I find great joy in documenting these ephemeral, never-again moments.

Such beautiful photos, Caitlin. Judging so many great photos was a real challenge, but I really loved yours. I am particularly drawn to your caption, with hope for every new dawn.
