What rises up?—
Steam from my red coffee mug,
Green tendrils of a stubborn succulent

What weighs down?—
Stacks of unread books,
Baskets of unfolded laundry

What waits in the space between?—
An unripe banana on the cluttered counter,
An untuned violin in its velvet-lined case

A tentative sip from the mug,
A turned page to chapter one,
A swipe of rosin on the bow,
Life in balance.
