Dear friends and readers,

In case you missed it, we are now holding our second photography contest here at The Sunlight Press. Submissions to the contest close this Friday, May 31, and details about how to submit your work are on our Submit page. The last time we held a photography contest was in 2019. Please consider entering this year before the deadline!

If you’re a regular reader of The Sunlight Press, you likely know we are a literary journal mostly publishing written work, but once a month on Mondays, we publish photography. Also, whenever we publish a short story, a poem, or an essay, we illustrate it with photography that we’ve accepted through our submissions process or with photography available for free on sites such as pexels, unsplash, or pixabay, for instance. We spend time every week deciding how to illustrate work and are gratified when photography we’ve accepted pairs well with written work we publish.

As part of our current contest, we will choose a winner and two finalists who will be awarded cash prizes. Additionally, we will accept some work submitted through the contest for regular (paid) publication.

This is all by way of saying, don’t delay submitting your work this week by midnight Friday (12.00 am ET)! We would love to consider it for the contest and for publication in our journal. Again, more details about what we are looking for on our Submit page. We’re delighted that photographer Patricia Joynes whose work we’ve published over the years will judge our finalists. Her work appeared most recently at The Sunlight Press in July 2023, and for the first time in May 2019.

IN OTHER NEWS, we will close for the summer to all submissions on Monday, July 1. We reopen to all work on the Tuesday after Labor Day, Sept. 3. As a reminder, our publication pay rates go up on June 1. More details in our March Editors’ Note.

Happy almost-summer!
