Hello readers near and far,
Yesterday, we were excited to announce the winning story in our spring 2020 Flash Fiction Contest, “The Stupid Smart Girl,” by Monica Wang. We thank the 212 writers who submitted flash stories (less than 1,000 words) to our contest. We are grateful to all who participated. If you have not heard from us, please know your piece is still under review for regular publication and we will notify you as soon as possible. Many thanks for your patience.
Additionally, we extend a warm thanks to writer Cathy Ulrich who graciously judged the 17 finalist stories. Cathy is the founding editor of Milk Candy Review, a journal of flash fiction. Her work has been published in journals including Black Warrior Review, Passages North, and Wigleaf, and can be found in Best Microfiction 2019 and 2020, Best Small Fictions 2019, and Wigleaf’s Top 50 Very Short Fictions 2017 and 2019. She is the author of the flash fiction collection, Ghosts of You, available through Okay Donkey Press. A mixed-race writer, she lives in Montana with her daughter and various small animals. Find her on Twitter @loki_writes.
Helping us as well with the contest was our staff of generous volunteer readers who reviewed a number of pieces for us: Susan Pohlman, Elizabeth Spencer, Kate Jones, Amanda Steel, and Rica Keenum. Thank you all!
In other news, please note: We are closed to submissions during July while we catch up on all work submitted. We will reopen on Aug. 1. Any work submitted during July will not be reviewed. Thanks for your understanding.
As always, thank you for visiting The Sunlight Press. There’s a lot to read out there and it’s good to have you here. Stay well, safe, and enjoy your summer.
Warmly,
Rudri Bhatt Patel and Beth Burrell
